DVD-R
These one-time record discs offer 4.7GB or 120 minutes of storage capacity, ideal for recording home movies and video clips. When DVD media technology was first developed, the plus (+) and dash (-) formats had different writing/reading specifications. Today, most DVD writers and readers work with no noticeable performance differences between DVD+R and DVD-R disc formats. Check with your manufacturer’s suggested DVD format to ensure compatibility – especially with older units.

Can I record over video/data stored on a DVD+R or DVD-R?
No. DVD-Recordable discs are single-layer DVD discs designed for one-time recording.

Blu-Ray media comes in several formats; including BD-R (Blu-Ray Recordable Disc), BD-R DL (Dual-layer recordable) and BD-RE (Blu-Ray Re-Writable Disc).

What are the differences among the formats?
The differences are as follows:

  • BD-R DL have twice the storage capacity of BD-R, data is recorded once, then the disc is only readable
  • BDXL has twice the stoarge capacity of BD-R DL, data is recorded once, then the disc is only readable

How much more capacity can BDXL hold versus standard or dual layer BD-R?
BDXL discs include a third storage layer to give it a storage capacity of 100GB. Standard Blu-ray discs come with storage capacities of 25GB for a single-layer disc and 50GB for a dual-layer disc.

So how do I know which Blu-Ray media to use?
Blu-Ray media is the logical choice for backing up HD video and audio files. BD-R discs are excellent for archiving HD home movies or music collections. If your video or music collection is more extensive, BD-R DL or BD-R XL discs offer greater storage capacity (up to 3x that of BD-R) requiring fewer discs.
